What is a doula?
A doula is a facilitator and advocate for birthing parents. I will help you envision your ideal birth experience. I can help empower women and their partners through education. We will talk about about what happens to your body during pregnancy and birth, and the choices available to you during the process.
The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek, meaning "a woman who serves." It now also refers to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth, or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.
Why Choose a doula?
Studies have shown that having support during birth relieves pain, decreases fear and makes labour more manageable. Mothers that labour with a doula have 25% shorter labors, the chance of caesarean is cut in half and drastically reduces the need for other medical interventions. A doula fills the gaps in medical coverage and can refocus women on the the joys of birth and discovers their strengths to do it.
A doula is not meant to replace a partner; I am there to complement you. As a doula, I can take care of some of the distractions or other details that may come up during the labour, delivery, and postpartum period. This allows partners to focus on the mother.
